National Cemetery
This monument was built in 1869 with
funds appropriated by Union states with soldiers buried
in the national cemetery. Each state paid in proportion
to its representation in Congress. The monument marks the
site of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in November 1863.
The marble components are being displaced by the
freeze/thaw cycle of failed mortar joints.
The marble is suffering problems typical
of this material in today's hostile environment. The
granite components require extensive remedial masonry
work. It is recommended that an appropriate iron fence be
erected to protect this monument from visitors climbing
on it.
Cost of remedial work: $49,000;
cost of the fence: $140,000;
total cost: $189,000.
